Snacking on Vegetables: K-2

In this lesson SNAP-Ed Nutritionist, Wanda, will show you how to identify vegetables of a variety of colors, identify the health benefits of vegetables, and recognize that vegetables are a healthy snack! Wanda walks you through coloring the different vegetables and plays a Vegetable Train game to get kids moving and help them remember the different vegetables.

Why eat vegetables for snacks?

Some of the reasons might be:

  • Vegetables help your body grow the way it should
  • When you cut yourself, vegetables help you heal faster
  • Vegetables keep your eyes skin bones teeth and
    hair healthy
  • Vegetables help you stay well since they do
    not contain unhealthy kinds of fat or sugar
  • Vegetables help your body stay in balance

 

These are all good reasons!

Vegetables also give you energy, and when you have energy, you can run and play longer and do all the things you want to do. There are a lot of different colors of vegetables too.

Some vegetables fall into a couple different color categories because of their varieties. Cauliflower, for example, can be orange, purple and green. Bell peppers are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, and brown. They are a rainbow of fun!

Some veggies like eggplant are one color on the outside and another in the middle. It’s the part we eat that counts!
Although eggplant is purple on the outside and white in the middle, you can eat the purple part, so it can be considered a purple vegetable.

Vegetables taste great and are so good for us! Give your body what it needs to stay healthy and deliver the rainbow of tasty vegetables to your belly! The next time you want a snack, grab from the vegetable group!
